Bad Karma - The Anti-guide to Backpacking in India (2010)
Adventures in India as clueless backpackers. This poorly acted, low budget, ad hoc video is an attempt at bringing out more of the inner idiot, and no destination is better for that than India. While most backpackers find India's cultural diversity shocking to the sterile western brains, the backpackers can also demonstrate rather puzzling and unhinged behaviour that if not shocking, can be quite amuzing to the locals. Or just plain stupid. Every year, thousands of backpackers make total asses of themselves while traveling the subcontinent: whether through religious epiphanies, overindulgence in drugs, gullibility, or just baseline ignorance or inability/unwillingness to learn.... We shot a mass of video clips, some totally staged, some totally real, some a blend of improv and reality, and then edited them in an attempt at making a semi-coherent story line. The project was a big joke, especially with the budget of zero dollars, but whatever... It's a real mish-mash of weirdness. Indians and people with India experience will be most familiar with the content, but everyone should walk away with a good sence of "WTF?" The movie is cut-up into 16 episodes (due to Youtube limitations) full of wannabes, McDonald-junkies, blenders, and otherwise weird characters (though most of them are myself and Jeremy, a Monkeetime newbie). Heaps of other backpackers as well as ordinary local folk came out and helped with filming, acting and logistics of the movie, and if it doesn't get any Oscar nominations, the whole thing was a fun project and a good laugh.
